ARTIST BIO
John Graham is a multidisciplinary artist and an award-winning independent filmmaker based in Saskatoon, Canada. John started his professional creative life by studying architecture and working as a young architect. He later shifted his creative focus to develop a career as a visual artist in multiple art media and filmmaking.
John’s ever-diversifying visual art practice includes printmaking, artist’s books, painting, drawing, installations, and digital imaging. John has received dozens of awards, grants, fellowships and prizes. His visual art has been widely exhibited in over 195 solo, duo and group shows in North America, Europe and Asia. He has participated in dozens of artist residencies worldwide to create visual art and short film projects.
John has been the writer, producer, director and editor of 9 experimental short films that have been screened at over 200 film festivals, gallery venues and awards ceremonies in over 40 countries. Many of these short films have won Best Film and Best Experimental Film as well as nominations for awards. STILL HERE / IMMERDAR (2024) is his 10th newest art film and explores the theme of dying beautifully.
John has taught visual art at universities, colleges and art institutes in Canada, the USA, and Australia since 1999. He is an Associate Professor and the Chair of Printmaking in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Saskatchewan. He continues to develop his multi-faceted art career while maintaining a busy teaching practice in studio art.
John’s visual artwork has been acquired by public and private art collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Canada Council Art Bank, the Loto-Québec Corporation, the National Bank of Canada, the City of Ottawa Art Collection, the National Library of Canada, the National Library of Québec, and the New York Public Library. His short experimental films are in the collections of the National Film Board of Canada, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Saskatchewan Arts Board.
